Miss Merribelle Simms, a refined Southern lady of humor, will entertain the group with her tales of the genteel Southern life. There will be an assortment of finger sandwiches, scones and sweets. Women are invited to wear a favorite hat and participate in the Prettiest Hat Contest. This event is open to community members. Tickets are $15. This year’s theme is “A Foundation for Leadership” and will include a wonderful dinner, music, a short program, as well as a silent auction and raffle. Proceeds will be used to support educational scholarships and program enhancements for Kishwaukee College . Thursday, Nov. 13: Each fall, the Joseph F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center celebrates "The Winner," the barbed wire for which Glidden received a patent Nov. 24, 1874. A special Pat ent Day Dinner is the organization's primary fund-raiser. This year it is Thursday, Nov. 13, at Best Western Inn & Suites, DeKalb. Social time is 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. There will be musical entertainment by Jen Jencks-Conley, featuring music performed in the 1860s-1870s. Tickets are $50, and include a delicious dinner. A $500 cash raffle also is held; tickets are $5 or three for $10, and you do not need to be present to win. All board members are selling tickets.
